One of our most heartwarming story is about Giora and Dan.

Much like all the bats that come to us, Giora and Dan's story also has a lot of good people along the way - 

2.3.17 - A lovely girl found an elderly injured bat on the pavement next to a dance studio in Kfar Saba. She called the amazing Gabi who picked him up, warmed him, fed and took car of him.

3.3.17 - The awesome Liron picked up the bat and drove him to Petah Tikva to Dr. Tali Stein at the vet clinic. In the examination they discovered a huge abscess in his chest, that made it difficult for him to breath, and was a few days away from exploding inside the body, which would have had a fatal result.

In addition, he had on his back what appeared to be an old dirt, but when we checked further we discovered a huge contaminated hole that started to close in a way that would prevent him from moving his wing and fly.

The amazing Tali Stein drained the abscess and cleaned the wound on his back.

The bat would have to take several types of antibiotics, go through physiotherapy and wounds cleaning, but unfortunately would also need surgery on his back - a thing we dreaded, since it's an old bat, and in general we don't like to operate unless it's a matter of life and death...

So, in order to try and avoid surgery there's a need for 1000% care for one elderly bat.To give medication. to moderate. To clean and disinfect the sounds twice a day. To give him physiotherapy exercises twice a day. 

What should we do?

The sanctuary is full of injured bats... Our foster homes are full of bat babies...

Then we thought of our new volunteer Dan!

Dan picked up the bat, all of the required medicined, wrote down the instructions and went on his way.

We have to admit, we were worried at first - Dan is a new, young volunteer.

And a rehabilitative foster care is not an easy task.. and in addition we gave him an elderly bat...

Bats are a wild animals, with all that implies - they can run away at the first chance, bite when they're in pain, or worst case - simply die of the stress.

But Dan was simply an angel! He didn't give up for a minute!

He named the bat Giora and did everything so that Giora will be ready for surgery.

In addition, he sent pictures to Dr. Tali Stein everyday to show progress.

When he was out of medications he went to his own private vet to get new ones.

After 10 days... An amazing thing happened.

Giora doesn't need surgery! Thanks to wonderful Dan!

Thanks to the Dan's persistence, the big heart, the gentleness, and motivation, and the fact that he didn't give up for a moment - Giora recovered, and doesn't need surgery!

Giora arrived at the sanctuary, where he learned how to fly again - and of course in the future he will return to nature!
